October 30, 2013 - 4:46 pm

The Fredericksburg Community Orchestra, under the direction of Theresa Britt and with the support of the Board of Directors, is pleased to announce the First Annual Frank Van der Stucken Composition Award. The project recognizes young composers who write string orchestra music that is exciting, interesting, and approachable by novice and intermediate players. The contest is open to all composers under age 30 or any student currently enrolled in a university degree program, regardless of age. There is a $10 application fee.

To be considered, please submit a printed score that you feel best represents your compositional voice. Works scored for string orchestra or string quartet will be considered. (Full orchestra pieces will not be accepted.) MP3’s of MIDI realizations or live performances of the submitted works are also helpful but not required.

Members of the Fredericksburg Community Orchestras will perform the winning piece at the 2014 Van Der Stucken Festival on March 29, 2014. The winner and runner up will also receive recognition at the Festival.
To apply, please submit the scores, a brief letter of interest describing your previous composition experiences and accomplishments, application fee and optional recordings to:

PO BOX 1132

Materials must be postmarked by January 15, 2014. Finalists will be notified via email in February, and final results will be posted on the webpage. Be sure to include complete contact information in application packet.
