FCO Opens Season October 27, 2012

The Fredericksburg Community Orchestra opens its 2012-2013 season with a free “Fall Potpourri” concert this Saturday, Oct 27, at 2:00 p.m. in St. Barnabas Church in Fredericksburg.

According to FCO Executive Director Theresa Britt, the afternoon performance will include short selections by Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, and Rossini. The group will perform a few fun tunes along with a new piece written by Comfort native Joshua Allerkamp.

“This is an informal, family-friendly gathering,” Britt said. “We want families to bring their children so they can listen to and meet live performers playing the string instruments.”

The FCO Ambleside Quartet (Henry Alvarez, Rebecca Sechrist, Maeve Junker, Ella Junker) will start the concert with the “Star Spangled Banner” and “Pavane from Capriol Suite” by Peter Warlock.

The FCO Quartet (Theresa Britt, Phil Houseal, Tammy Widener, John Reeve) will debut Joshua Allerkamp’s “Ancient Temple,” followed by Mozart’s “Rondo from String Quartet in G Major, K. 80,” Handel’s “March from Flavius,” “Menuetto & Trio from String Quartet in C Major Op. 76, No. 3” by Haydn, and “Goin’ Home, from Symphony No. 9–The New World” by Dvorak.

Following intermission, the entire FCO String Orchestra will perform: “Overture to William Tell” by Rossini, “Rondeau from the Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B Minor” by Bach, “Allegretto, Second movement from Symphony No. 7” by Beethoven, “Sahara Crossing” by Meyer, “Legend of Dark Mountain” by Newbold, “Tango: Por Una Cabeza” by Gardel, and “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The orchestra consists of community members ranging in age from 12 to 75, from beginners to experienced players. The mission of nonprofit Fredericksburg Community Orchestras is to promote string education in Fredericksburg and surrounding communities.
